2008-2009 FIRST GRADE TEACHER IN KUWAIT
As in the majority of, expensive for the parents, INTERNATIONAL ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE , AND HIGH SCHOOLS, UNIVERSITIES or COLLEGES...
THE CONSCIENCIOUS STUDENTS are OVERLOADED. I taught my co-ed
students; English , of course, Spelling, Conversation, grammar, Reading, Writing... Math, and World Geography.
In Arabic they were taught their Language skills, Science, the Geography and History of KUWAIT and religion. They
were taught Computers, Art, Music, and Physical Ed. by specialized English Teachers.
As a certified Health and Physical - Ed. teacher and a lover of music and art, naturally, I incorporated those fields
into all lessons. I was welcomed in the homes and out
with the students and their parents often. It was such an unforgettable treat when my twin boy students spent the day with
their mom making cupcakes for me. They were great and so was dinner.
SECOND GRADE TEACHER IN BAHRAIN 2010 -2011 FIRST GRADE, my all time FAV,
in NIGERIA 2011-2012 In ALL the previous
years of my life I could pick and choose where I wanted to work and which grade I wanted to teach. I have
been dreaming AND APPLYING TO JOBS in Russia, as I am half Ukrainian, New Guinea.
For sure, after experiencing some of the wonders of the Middle East and the warm loving people, customs, beautiful art, music,
family importance ... When I was offered a job teaching at a Co- Ed University IN SAUDI ARABIA, I was thrilled. They had all
of my necessary paper work, diplomas, transcripts, resume... I even signed a contract.
Shortly after signing the contract I was called by a woman who apologized profusely as she told me that the KING had
declared a new LAW for not just Saudi Arabia, but, many other Middle Eastern countries ; NO TEACHER CAN BE HIRED OVER THE
AGE OF 58 as NO TEACHER CAN TEACH OVER THE AGE OF 60 IN THOSE COUNTRIES.
With my COMPUTER, PHONE, AND WEB-CAM job search from Las Vegas (Where most of my world treasures are in storage), and
then Boulder, I found that All of the available teaching positions, in EVERY COUNTRY, at every Education level, were asking
for EXPERIENCED TEACHERS. When they received my resume and/ or a
phone call AND DISCOVERED my AGE, THEY WERE NO LONGER interested in hiring me. But I have over 40 years
of international experience. In nearly all of the schools where I was applying, I was refused because they
thought I was TOO OLD. Eeeeeeek!!!
There are other sad stories. One example, in Korea, where I had very successfully
taught all ages in 6 different locations, I was hired, signed a contract, Fed-Exed it to Korea, packed my bags, ( one suitcase
filled with lesson ideas involving international stuffed animals, games , alphabets...) and was e-mailed, not even called,
and told that another teacher was already to start work in the country right at the door of the school.
I was waiting for my teaching visa and that teacher had one. So,
with everything packed and very excited to go, I was told sorry.
27 years ago I was dead off a motorcycle in Turkey on a motorcycle trip around
the world. Somehow I ended up in a coma for about a month. When I woke up I was in a wheelchair and paralyzed
for life, severe brain damage, broken back, broken jaw... I couldn't speak or even see well.
But thru the masters in physio-therapy, speech pathology, pool therapy... I learned to walk and talk again. I decided
to go back to university and become a certified teacher. Now, nearly thirty years latter, VERY REASONABLY, I am too
physically weak to teach full time. Hey, I can't even carry a water bottle
and my chess set without pain. So, heading out of Colorado to teach would be more than tough.
MY dream is to find a place where I can afford to live in Denver, make friends here that I don't have to leave and maybe
never see again, volunteer at the BOYS and GIRLS CLUB, go to the symphony, play chess, shoot pool, dance, jam with my flute,
visit the art galleries, grow my spices... 2005-2008 English as
a Second Language Instructor Pre-K - Adults
Geoje/Chongwon, South Korea -Acted as teacher for ESL students of all ages.
Conducted classes in conversational English, colloquialisms, encouraged discussion of books, movies, incorporated drama
and role playing, as well as experiential learning through field trips to local markets, and English speaking establishments.
In Chongwon, I was responsible for instructing a group of 15 male engineers for the Korean Daewoo automotive plant.
The Engineers had been educated in English speaking countries, however I was asked to come on board to bring them up
to international conversational standards so that they could effectively conduct business with foreign English speaking engineers.
2004-2005 English as a Second Language Instructor Pre Kindergarten thru
Adult Aston English School in Weinan, China for a 6 month contract and X'ian, China
for another 6 month contract. Being an ESL teacher in CHINA WAS
fabulous, heart-warming, and special everyday. I will NEVER forget the wonderful, dying to learn, Chinese Teachers, that I
TAUGHT AND PLAYED with. And my inspiring,( TOO) HARD WORKING STUDENTS were exceptional at all ages.
I don't need my pictures to remind me of them. It was such a good feeling that I could facilitate instruction
for students of all ages, and they thanked me over and over again.
It was touching to be asked and appointed as the chief trainer for a Chinese Teacher's Training Program. It, of course,
was also a lot of work. But hey, teaching ain't easy. I LOVE IT.
All ages enjoyed my stressing the importance of teaching through hands on methods, and creating active, involved classrooms.
AND , CONTRARY TO THEIR CULTURE, relax, go ahead and speak even if you think you are not going to say it correctly
= PRACTISE DOESN'T MAKE PERFECT, BUT, IT SURE HELPS and is the way to learn conversation. Yes, many of my students
knew grammar and even spelling rules better than I do. In many countries around
the world acceptance to university is THE # 1 GOAL of ALL and is prepared for before birth. For those students
(parents ) THAT CAN AFFORD it, ESL classes are started before these kids are 4 years old. There is no time for guitar or ballet
lessons. No time for basketball or swimming. Classes, tudors, and studying, for millions of students is
24/7. But, they all had time for me. Naturally learning more English was their main goal, but
we always had GREAT FUN, SHARED, made each other shine and became friends.
Some of my closest encounters and life friendships were/are with parents and grandparents who didn't know any English and
I didn't know their language either. With JOY AND LIFE LONG MEMORIES I think of them all very often.
